We have all taken a battering recently but let’s begin to fight back!

When we ask anyone nowadays how they are, they all seem to respond that they are “so busy” and they are right, everyone is experiencing huge pressure — from online meetings, fighting with the email inbox, working on the huge To-Do list and even trying to keep others on task while remote working — all of this is the norm. What can we do to fight back and start to enjoy work and have something to look forward to in our spare time? How can we make headway with reducing our stress levels and developing our resilience?

Idea number 1: “Share the load to prevent stress build-up”.

We all feel reluctant to ask for help when we are struggling and instead just bash on and this just makes us feel even more stressed and sometimes even resentful. Instead of doing this, why not admit to others that we could really benefit from sharing some things — working together instead of in isolation? Other people have some awesome ideas about how to get things done. We are stronger together, plan ways to work collaboratively! What tasks could you share or delegate and how can you plan to do this?

Idea number 2: “The most essential item in your diary — meeting with yourself to reflect”.

When the pressure is building up and we feel as if we have lost direction, we can keep ploughing through it but perhaps the best thing to do is to schedule time to think, plan and refresh ourselves. We can write down our plan in a journal and get a new sense of direction. When can you put an appointment for reflection in your diary (make it a regular date so you keep on top of your levels of stress)? Reflective or reactive, this is our choice!

Idea number 3 : “Get things done, holding on to tasks gives them more power to drain your energy”.

There are many jobs that I avoid and sometimes try to leave them until tomorrow or next week but sadly, they seem to grow into a small mountain of stressors — and I know most of them should be tackled not avoided. I try nowadays to just complete these tasks and mentally I feel so much more positive and my stress levels are lower. How about you, what small tasks could you complete today?

As a leadership coach, I meet people who are feeling frazzled and who feel they have lost direction, some of them are even feeling hopeless but I support them to see what they are doing right and build on these. I also work with them to identify their ideal goal and help them to plan a roadmap to start moving forward again.
